Alkaline water: discover the main benefits
Alkaline water is water with a pH above 7.5. What brings it close to blood pH, what studies already suggest about its effects, and how to get it at home.
There has been increasing talk about the benefits of alkaline water. But after all, what is it, how does it work, and what are these benefits?
Alkaline water
Simply put, this type of water has a pH above 7.5. pH is a measure that corresponds to the hydrogen potential present in a solution, determining whether it is acidic, neutral, or alkaline.
The most commonly used procedure to obtain alkaline water today is electrolysis, which takes advantage of the electrical charges that occur naturally in this process and are found in calcium and magnesium ions.
But why does it benefit our body? Many studies are still underway to discover the full potential of this type of water, but what is already known is that it may improve our blood flow, muscle performance, and even help prevent disease.
Blood pH
The main justification for the benefits of alkaline water is its proximity to the pH of our blood, which is between 7.35 and 7.45. What happens is that through diet, physical activity, stress, and other factors, our blood can undergo an acidification process that may harm our health.
A healthy body has the necessary regulators to balance pH on its own, but by consuming this type of water, we help facilitate the process.
Main benefits
Although many studies on the subject have not yet been completed, we can already observe benefits such as improved physical performance. During physical activity, our body accumulates lactic acid while seeking energy. By drinking alkaline water, you help rebalance your pH and support muscle recovery. In addition, it can act as a detoxifier and antioxidant, helping to prevent premature aging.
Those who suffer from acid reflux may also benefit from alkaline water. Reflux is a gastric process resulting from excess acid in the stomach, which can be relieved through the consumption of alkaline water and the balancing of pH levels.
And returning to the topic of blood pH, studies show that consuming alkaline water can reduce blood viscosity, allowing for improved blood flow and circulation.
But it is important to remember: drinking alkaline water does not replace regular visits to your doctor. If you notice any symptoms, consult a healthcare professional. This type of water is extremely beneficial for various purposes, but it does not substitute medical supervision.
