Hard water: understand what it is and what to do about it

Did you know that pure, balanced water is important not only for our health? That's right! Water quality also affects the maintenance of equipment, whether in our homes or businesses.

An important factor to analyze in our water is the well-known

For chemistry, water is considered 'hard' when there isan excess of calcium and magnesium. Specifically, above 120mg per liter. This type of water contains salts that are insoluble in water and react with the anions in soaps, producing insoluble compounds.

What problems does hard water cause?

When water becomes hard, it is prevented from performing its cleaning action and can bring various drawbacks, mainly economic ones. The salts present in this liquid canaccumulate in pipes,clogging or causing rust,contaminating the water in contact with them. Furthermore,using hard water to cook foods such as vegetables, for example, causes them to harden instead of soften.It can also make soap unable to lather and leavestains on glasses even after washing.

Other problems that can result from hard water include:

Staining clothes;

Drying out skin and hair;

Clogging of pipes, showers, faucets, and plumbing connections – especially where hot water flows;

In industry, there can be a risk of accidents such as boiler explosions

Accelerated corrosion of electrical components.

But how can I identify the presence of hard water in my home or business?

A simple and effective way to find out if the water you use is hard is through thefoam test. Take a bar of soap or toothpaste and use it. If the product produces little or no lather, the chances of the water being hard are very high, and you may be using more soap when showering, washing clothes, your car, and in other routine situations.

Is hard water bad for your health?

There are no studies proving that hard water is harmful to health, but there are some indications that excessive consumptionmay causea higher incidence of kidney stones. Hard water may also contain a higher amount of salt, which causes a brackish taste, contributing to thirst not being quenched and causing laxative effects.

Treatment for reducing salts in hard water

The treatment performed to eliminate hard water is identified as descaling and consists of passing water through ion exchange resins that capture the calcium and magnesium present. Descalers are devices that contain exchange resins inside, responsible for retaining calcium and magnesium, transforming the water into soft water, more suitable for use and consumption.
